chain tools
biker osh asked:

I have quick relase wheels on my bike. I took the back one off the other day to fit in my sister’s car. However, when i went to put it back on, i noticed the chain got all tangled. This means that the chain isnt staying on the chainwheel or the casette or the rear mech. It wont feed through. Anyone know to untangle the chain without having to use a chain tool?
Thanks

Assuming you didn’t bend the chain by forcing it, it sounds like you might have mis-routed the chain through the rear derailleur.

I’ve also seen cases where the chain happily remained positioned on the derailleur frame rather than riding on the jockey wheel. At quick glance, the chain _looks_ like it’s correctly routed, but if you look closely, you might notice it’s not riding on the jockey wheel. That is guaranteed to cause shifting problems.

If the chain is bent, it’s best to replace it.

Keep playing around with it, you wont have to take it apart. Shift the rear derailleur to the highest gear and put the chain on the smallest sprocket when you put the wheel on.

If you didn’t take the chain apart to get the wheel off, you won’t have to do anything mechanical to get the wheel back on. There should be a straight run of chain from the top of the front gears to the top of the back gears. Start with that. It sounds like you are engaging the chain on the wrong side when reassembling the bike. That’s one reason I take off the front wheel to get the bike to fit in a smaller space. I can get the bike between the front and back seats of my car that way.
