discodolly asked:

I am thinking of upgrading my bike wheels to set of Shimano Dura Ace 7850SL. Should I fit a new sprocket and chain also? The sprocket and chain on the bike is fairly new. The chain checker tool says the chain is still good. Bike is only a year old and done about 200miles. So should i just take the sprocket off the old wheels and fit to the new wheels? Thanks in advance

MidAtlantian2 asked:

When you take a bicycle chain apart, you use a tool to press the center pin almost all the way out. Then when you reassemble it, you press it back together. But I have found that the reassembled link is usually very stiff: not very flexible at all. Am I missing something in my technique? Is there a way to ‘decompress’ the newly assembled link?

Tim H. asked:

I have a heavy bicycle chain that I need to shorten in order for it to fit on my new sprocket. I have disconnected the master link but I need to remove several links in order for it to fit properly. I do not have chain splitter tool and I notice they no longer sell these things in your average department store. Is there a way to remove chain links without it without damaging the integrity of the chain itself? Thanks so much in advance for anyone with any kind of an answer.

MarkE asked:

I currently have a 12-25 cassette. I just picked up a 11-23 and a 11-28. I have never changed my cassette before so I am not sure if I need a new chain with these. I was also wondering what kind of tool I need to remove the cassettes. I found a tool by Park that says free wheel cassette remover, but I don’t think that is the tool I need. Is that only for the free wheel style of cassettes or do you use those for the free hub style too? FYI if it matters the cassettes are Shimano.
I guess I was wondering if I would need a new chain because of the bigger/smaller sprokets not because it is worn out. My chain has less then 1000 miles on it. Again I was more concerned with the length of chain.

Neal Mangan asked:

I have a Giant Yukon that I’d like to start using again, the figure of 8 for the gears at the rear of the bike mangled and I’d rather not spend money to get it fixed. Now the chain is obviously larger than normal because its not going through the 8 at the back, now would I be able to take links out of my chain in order to make it fit on the sprockets of my choice? Can I do this without a special tool? Take of the split-link and user plyers?

The problem is that if I break a spoke in the back wheel I don’t know what tool can remove the chain disc over the back hub so that I can thread the spoke through. Used to geared bikes and have all those tools, even a tensiometer. If anyone could give me information on what tool to use and its name, I would be grateful. Thanks.
