Joe A asked:

I need some help with my dogs Ruby and Onyx, training. I just need some techniques that I can try. They are hyper mutts, Ruby is the oldest and she likes jumping the fence, Onyx the puppy like finding holes in the fence and getting out them. I’ve gone through drastic measures to keep them in, like blocking the holes with boulders, and chaining Ruby (which I am strongly against) so I need some tips so I can return my dogs’ freedoms.
Thanks for the tips, but I need more based on Ruby. Out fence is one of those wire diomond looking ones, and she can easily jump them. Tips for preventing jumping…

dragonwolf asked:

if choke chains are so wrong why are they used in dog shows? and them ppl watch these shows they see how the chain goes on and how it used…but yet they can’t bring them selves to put it on thier dog even though it walks them down the street. chains are a ver useful tool when working with untrained shelter dogs, that thier owner couldn’t handle. i know around here thats why alot of dogs end up in shelters is because they have no basic training..they can’t come, sit, stay, ect and leash training..HA i can only think of a very few dogs that i have walked that didn’t try to drag ya. normal things any good owner is going to teach.
And just about every other question on here is about training in someway or another.

so i just wonder what ur thought on choke chains good or bad, why , and do u know how to use one?
i don’t hear dog gasping when i use one…because well i know how to use a chain. taught by a good friend on mine at a young age who is a trainer. other ppl useing a chain wrong at the base of the neck or well just holding the chain tight yes.

I agree the name does not help it rep.
thank everyone lots of good answers.

Ive never use a halty before i may have to pick one up and see how well it works. Chain have been my training method so long and i’ve used the martingale (cloth) one before on small small dogs.
Never tried a prong one. I think in the wrong hands it would do more harm the a choke chain.

By the why dog training is what i want to do schooling for(when my kids are a bit more grown). and where i live we only have one full time trainer the other one is a friend of mine who only does a few classes a year. there are others but they are 40 miles away.

oh and whippet woman. u are so right. ppl would have to pay money and put time in to their dog…and so few do.

I swear some ppl think dogs train themselves!!!
Oh and yes off leash training is very important i will agree there.
however in working with shelter dogs most need a chain…some will slip a regular collar. and if no large fencing off leash training is hard to do. and the shelter i worked at most all dogs had to be on a chain for fear of slipping regular collars.
not all dogs after being brought home need a chain, and no ofcourse they should never be left on a dog, only to be used for training.

Simba asked:

Earlier tonight, I noticed that 2 dogs were chained up in the back of a pickup truck, in the bed area. The weather wasn’t bad this evening, but it was the conditions that I was concerned about. First, they were there for an extended amount of time, at least an hour. Also the bed of the pickup was full of junk. It looked like it had tow chains, tools, tool boxes and a lot of other junk that made it difficult for the dogs to walk and lay down. I don’t know whose dogs they are but I have seen the truck there quite a bit in the last several weeks, so it might be a new neighbor. I live next to a couple of duplexes and they might live there. I would have called the SPCA animal control immediately, but it was too late to report it (they don’t take reports 24 hours a day.) Another neighbor of mine also told me that he saw the same thing earlier this week. Is this something the animal control officers would take serious? Even if I don’t know whose dogs they are?

asked:

Prongs,e-collars,haltis/harnesses,choke chain, leashes, clickers etc. all training tools? I know training tools and methods is sometimes a heated debate on the dog section, and i’m not trying to “start” anything, so i am curious to know people’s opinions on ALL training tools – not just the ones that some may claim to be dangerous, cruel and ‘negative’ or the ones others claim are not effective in anyway or are for ‘bunny huggers’.

Do you use ANY training tool? e.g clicker or a prong?
How does your dog respond to your training tool?

What is your opinion on prongs, e-collars, clickers, haltis etc?
Do you feel that everyone should own one and every dog should be trained on one (again, any training tool)?
How do you feel about people not using prongs/clickers/e-collars/haltis etc?

i have a lab/ABPT/great dane mix ..so yeah…he is pretty big..
i’m 14 and very small(around 4 ft 10 inches lol)

we got my dog when he was 1 or 2
and he walks pretty well on a leash most of the time
but when he sees other dogs .he goes crazy
like really crazy
and its hard for me to control him since he is so much bigger and stronger then me

once,i was walking him and he took after this one dog and ran a few blocks away
and he ran down the street
plues, alot of people get scared when they see such a big dog like him, plus he looks so much more pit bull then any other breed in him.it makes people scared cuz they think he’s going to bite or something
my mom is nervous to let me walk him alone now..
we have a choke chain but i don’t like using it on him

what other items/training tools do you think would be good for him?
my mom and i also kinda don’t want to use a prong collar…

thanks
we are training him too
we’re doing what launi said, only using a normal collar and he is getting better but my mom still thinks we need something to get more control of him
we tired an anti pulled harness..and launi you were right lol…it didn’t work out AT ALL
