    Ante up for the tool. I could probably do it without if my life depended on it, but its not worth the hassle.

    No, the best thing to use is a chain breaker, you need to put it back together again. If you have a master link you can file or grind the rivets down to the side plate and use a punch and hammer to knock them out.
