Shaggy asked:

The chainsaw drops the chain frequently during use after it was used to cut a cord of wood. Also, the tool-less chain tensioner is at the end– the chain cannot be tightened any futher. Dropping the chain ; inability to further tighten the chain — is this defective?

no the chain has stretched take a link out or buy a new chain

If the chain has stretched beyond the ability of the tensioner after cutting a cord of wood I would say that there is something wrong. Are you sure that the chain/bar oiler is working? If the chain was over heated it may stretch like that. Did you dull it and keep using it? I would check the oiler and if it is oiling I would take it back to Sears. Let me correct that, I would take it back to sears period.

Simple solution, buy a new chain. Then do not tighten the chain so tight on the bar. This will cause the chain to stretch too far. When you tighten the chain, lift the end of the bar and tighten to the point the chain just touches the bar. Then tighten the side cover.
