He shouldn't need an alternative. For those things you mention, there is no reason he shouldn't be wearing his wedding ring. Don't want to plant a seed, here, but it's not because he's getting sweaty that he doesn't want to wear it, because that's a really odd thought...
As another answerer mentioned, it's usually only guys in the trades who have to watch out with rings, because they can get caught and lots of guys have lost fingers!

Just dont wear the ring when you're working out or doing sports. My husband works in construction and he cant wear his ring because it cuts into his finger when he's working will all those tools so he doesnt wear it and my ring doesnt fit anymore so I dont wear my ring either. Its not a big deal for us. I mean the rings are a big deal because of what they symbolize, but wearing them isnt a big deal. So if you or your partner are afraid of loosing your rings at the gym or playing sports then just dont wear them during those times.

Put it in a wallet. A necklace would be good if they could wear that in an event.

Why risk losing or damaging the wedding band by putting it on a chain or a key chain? If your husband is going to the gym, he should either leave the band at home or do the same thing with it as he does with his wallet - leave it locked in a locker or whatever the gym does for valuables. If he's playing basketball or whatever, it's fine for him to leave it at home.

If you really want to get a case or something, what about something like these?

Our wedding bands were expensive and are very meaningful to my husband and I, so we treat them carefully and with respect. We take them off when there's the potential for damage and I personally don't see an issue with that. I know some people get uptight about people taking off their wedding band, but there are good reasons to do so.

Carabiener clip- I don't know how to spell it, but the little clips like the ones that rock climbers use. My hubby puts his clip on his keychain and then slides the ring on. It is a great way to hang his keys on the belt loop

My coworker puts his wedding ring on his keychain while he's working out. If your man is going to the gym from home, he can just leave it at home for the time being. Or he could possibly tie it (double knot) to his shoe lace.
