How do I hold the primary and secondary chains on the lower gear?

I am getting ready to remove a head on my 8 cyl 4.7 engine. I am looking at the manual and trying to figure out how to realease the aprocket and primary and secondary chains. It says there is a tool but trying to do it without any ideas. I have everything marked for timing reference and am at TDC. Do I have to take out the Cam shaft and lifters or can I leave them on? If anyone is really experienced pleased call me at 603-429-3172
