Yes!!! Very labor intensive, many special tools; ie. spring compressors, torque wrench(very good one) and lots of time! Also, if you”re going that deep, timing chain and gears are a necessity with new lifters and cam. It can be a do-it-yourself job but try and find someone that has the professional knowledge to supervise…That’s what I did!
I’d suggest you get a good engine tear down book or manual on that job but yes I’d change the timing chain etc for sure.
you dont nessasarily need new valve springs as long as your current springs are good and the new cam isnt much over stock specs.
it can be done by a novice with some mechanical ability. definitly install a new timing chain and gears. You may want to enlist some help with setting the valve lash and breaking in the cam. if its done improperly you can ruin a new cam in a few miles.
If I was going that far on an engine of that age for a classic vehicle like that I certainly would not stop there, I would do a complete rebuild on the engine complete with re-boring of the cylinders and a full valve service / grind. This is not so much a maintenance issue as it is a restoration of a piece of American History and no sense cutting corners. You will also save $$$ in the long run by overhauling the transmission at the same time. Yes it is a lot of work but that baby is worth it!
