Chains vary in the way they are supposed to be broken and reattached. On some the pin is pushed out altogether while on others you must stop short of doing that. Check with your local shop as to which type chain you have.

don’t push the pin all of the way out. turn the chain tool around and use the same method you used to push it out to push it back in. when the pin is all the way in the link will be stiff. bend it back and forth laterally (perpendicular to the chain’s pivoting direction) until the link loosens up and you’re done.

All good answers so far. You definetly DO NOT want to push the pin all the way through. If that is what has happened in your case, use your chain tool to completely remove the pin next to the pin you already removed, and go buy a master link to re-assemble your chain. Most manufacturers recommend using either a new pin, or a masterlink EVERY time you break your chain.
