You definetly DO NOT want to push the pin all the way through. If that is what has happened in your case, use your chain tool to completely remove the pin next to the pin you already removed, and go buy a master link to re-assemble your chain. On some the pin is pushed out altogether while on others you must stop short of doing that. Check with your local shop as to which type chain you have.
