Draw a line down the board with and cut just outside the line, finish with a wood rasp, sand paper or hand plane. Put the piece back in and glue and face nail it down with finish nails. Be aware your floor will contract (shrink) with drier weather and you may end up with a gap. You are not responsable for that repair or any other while you are under a rental agreement. If your landlord gives you a hard time or won't do the needed repairs, contact your local Landlord Tennant Association and ask for assistance. A small hand saw would do the job nicely. As you are just setting up some sort of house keeping it might be prudent to purchase an electric scroll saw ( hand held motorized jig saw ) it will always come in handy for other jobs you may encounter and it is not expensive.
