looking for the best/easiest way to put the masterlink on a chain without using a rivet tool to smash it together.

Some can be crimped with a small chisel if the rivets have indentions. Maybe you can go this route:
Easiest way: use a master link with a clip. Make sure the closed end faces the direction of travel.
