is it possible to take a back gear off a mountain bike without any special tools?

    If your cassette is removable, you will need a chain whip and a cassette nut socket to remove it.

    Why not get the correct chain.

    If you remove one sprocket, the cassette will be loose, you need all the sprockets for the cassette to work properly. Buy the right size chain
