Recently put a 9 speed (campy) chain on my road bike. The chain came with factory lube on it. No problems the first few rides (probably about 150 miles total) but then yesterday in the middle of a 30 mile ride the chain got two stiff links in it. We stopped and tried flexing the chain back and forth but no amount of tweaking the chain would loosen the stiff links. Ended up limping home with a jumping chain. Tonite I took out the 2 bad links and replaced them with some extra C-9 chain that I had. NOticed when tightening the new section I put in that those links are stiff too. WHat is the trick to closing a chain with a chain tool and having the links rotate freely?

The chain seems to be “kinked”, so I cannot weave it through the gear mechanism. I’m trying to take the chain off, in order to unkink it and weave it through properly. I bought a cheap chain tool, but it just bent. When trying to take the rods out of a link, does it matter which way you push the rod through? If so, how do you know which side is which? Can you remove any rods, or is there a master link that comes apart? Any known tool to make it easy? Thanks for any help.

Last month, I got a new chain with a quick (master) link installed on my mtn bike at a local bike store. After a few rides, I wanted to remove the chain to clean it, and thought it should be easy. However, I was unable to open the quick link by pressing both sides inwards with my hands and wound up having to use a chain tool to open another, regular link and clean the chain. I usually go by what I read in the Zinn & the Art of Mtn Bike Maint book, but didn’t find any help on this there. It did say that quick links can be stuck sometimes from the tension riding puts on the chain. Is there some trick to opening the quick link, or a tool that makes it easier? Thanks!
