Most pieces of metal are screwed onto the bike for a reason. If one piece is hitting the chain ring, then something is wrong. Depending on what it is, just removing the piece of metal might not be safe. Get an experienced cyclist to look at your bike and tell you what’s going on. It’s not hard to find experienced cyclists. They hang out in bike shops. You can easily recognize them. They’re the ones drooling over the most expensive bikes in the place.

    Intrepidfae’s advise is good.
Have you had this bike for awhile and the problem just started? What kind of bike is it? Multi-geared? Single speed?
I’m real curious as to what this “metal piece” is. Let us know once you learn what it is.

It sounds like a dog fang – a device used to stop the chain falling off the inside chain-ring. If it hits the chain ring – sounds like your worn chainset is coming to the end of it’s life…better get it checked in to bike hospital for some surgery!!!
